Grazie Padre Giovanni.

English version

The interview with Bishop Giovanni Scanavino printed in L?Espresso and La Nazione raised some new reasons for his dismissal. One that the Bishop mentioned was the presence of the Anglican Church in Orvieto, and in particular of a woman priest. As that woman priest, I would like to offer my deep gratitude to Bishop Scanavino for his open heart towards our presence in Orvieto since 2005.

Although I was made a priest in the Anglican Church in 2005, Padre Giovanni knew me previously as the wife of John Skillen, director of the Gordon College program, and the mother of little Isabelle who attended school in Orvieto. When I informed Bishop Scanavino that I was soon to be made a priest, although it was not a challenge he would have sought, he responded with graciousness. He recognized that as Christians we have a unified goal, bringing the light and truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. His actions toward the Anglicans in Orvieto were always in accordance with the teaching of the Second Vatican Council.

He sought to develop ecumenical dialogue and to respect our shared mission of evangelism and service. The Anglican Church in Orvieto serves English-speaking non-Catholics in the city and surrounding communities. Our services are held in rented space in Orvieto, not in a Catholic church. However, Padre Giovanni honored the presence of Anglicans in the city when he invited me to preach in the Duomo at a service during the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

Throughout my years of ministry in Orvieto, I consistently witnessed in Bishop Scanavino a man who chose to offer hospitality to strangers rather than to protect his own interests, and chose to act in Christian love rather than in fear. He used his power to strengthen the small and weak rather than to have power over them. And he sought to develop unity and understanding among Christians. It is now nearly three years since I returned to America and I am now in ministry there. Padre Giovanni is still a strong model for me of not only what it means to be a clergy person in the Church, but what it means to live out one?s Christian faith in the light of the gospel.

Thank you, Padre Giovanni.
